Finding Out the Value of Old Books?

August 30, 2020

Value of an Antique Dickens Book? - title pageI have this "Our Mutual Friend" book by Charles Dickens. I have not been able to find another like it online to reference how much it's worth. It says it was published in 1871 by D. Appleton and Company. It also includes the American Cyclopedia in the back of the book. It looks like it is in fairly good condition and I will add pictures above for reference. I was wondering how much this is worth if anything.

I see why there is a lot of confusion on this book. There are Dickens Books selling from 1.00 into the thousands. I am always surprised when I can't find an exact match to something--so I wonder if this is only ever sold with the dust jacket and that is why I can't seem to match the cover to any example in any of my resources.

My best suggestion when there is something with such wide values and so many options on what the covers look like, is to take it to a few places who specialize in old books and ask. I would go in asking if you need to insure it and if so, how much.

This way they will tell you if it is one of the $1.00 versions, a $9.99 version, a $200 version or one of those (rare) in the thousands.

I usually get 2-3 looks so I can see if the responses are consistent. By going in asking for information (for insurance) not values, you should get an idea of what you have.

Once you know exactly what this (based on the market) is and if it is part of a series (which I am pretty sure it is since it says it was sold by subscription) you can figure out a resale price for it.

Also regarding condition, you said it looks fairly good. To me, it looks fairly bad as it deep creases, lots of rubs and bent corners. That said, I am not a professional grader--so when you have it looked at, I would ask how they would grade the book. It is probably fair, but they can give you a better guide than I can. They can also see and smell it--smell has a huge impact on condition as even a whiff of mildew or "basement" smell can take a thousand dollar book into the low hundreds very quickly.

Post back what you learn! I hope you have one of the ones with a high value!!

Hi - I check eBay and Google for information on old books. You may be surprised at what info is available but eBay also has discussion sites that will help find info on books like this.

Good luck - you may have a nice "find".

This is a book that is slightly damaged and not in good condition. A book in good condition would sell for $25 used. You might be able to get around $15 for yours.

There are many variables because of first edition, first book club edition, etc. so if you can match your book to one of the exact books that have SOLD (not asking prices, but actual SOLD prices on eBay) you can see the value in today's market:

www.ebay.com/.../i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=1963+Planet...

If it matches one of the ones that had a best offer accepted, please let me know and I can tell you what they actually got.

That yours has some flaws will take 20-30% off of a sold value (meaning you can expect to get 20-30 percent less than the value that matches yours.

Let me know if I can help further.

Thanks!

Old Mark Twain books from 1900 may have some value, however, it can be very difficult to search for a value and interested collectors. You can check EBay, CraigsList, and other sites for possible values. Try this site to start:

This is an antique, since it is over 100 years old. It is also complete. Take it to a couple of book dealers for estimates.

cover pageI recently found a complete set of Voltaire's Oeuvres Completes, in 8 tomes. I believe it is an 1819 edition. There some damage to the bindings and some foxing on the paper, but otherwise in OK condition considering it's age. Could anyone tell me if it has any value?

Books over 100 years old are considered antiques, and have value. Take to several book dealers.
