Repairing a Toyota Sewing Machine

March 11, 2017

The machine is about 30 years old. It was my mum's so I am reluctant to part with it. It worked fine last time I used it, now nothing works except the motor. I oiled the machine and took the side off to look at the drive belts.

They are not broken. Maybe it is just old? The wheel at the side was very stiff; I managed to loosen it somewhat. I am flummoxed! Any help appreciated!

I'll bet you have a jam from material scraps or thread. Remove the needle plate and check in the bobbin area.

If you are still having problems you may be able to receive help from the Toyota Company as most of these companies are very good about answering questions. Here is a site that you can either call or email and they also may have a manual for your machine.

If they do not have a free manual, here is a site that lists one for $7.00:

Hope someone can help me out. I have an older Toyota AD860. It was in the middle of switching needles then got a needle case error. I knew it was moving to #12 so I moved it, but still had issue. I found the sensor ring on the shaft was loose so I tightened it.

Now I think it is not sure where it is at. I get it to reset, but when I push start, it does a thread cut and errors again. Any ideas?

There could be an adjustment needed to a nut behind the head on the machine. This blog gives more detail. www.digitsmith.com/toyota-860-needle-case-error-help...

There are many reasons for uneven stitching. The most common reason for uneven stitches:
1. Old or inferior or unsuitable thread.
Use good quality threads

2. Fabric is being pulled while sewing.
When sewing it is important to remember to never pull the fabric - allow the fabric to be taken up by the sewing machine.
3. Bad maintain the sewing machine.
Clean and lubricate your sewing machine.
4. There is a malfunction in the bobbin or bobbin is incorrectly threaded in the bobbin case.
Check to see if there are scratches on the bobbin and replace it if there are. The same goes for a worn bobbin. Replace the bobbin. Check to see if the bobbin and the bobbin case have been inserted correctly. You should hear a click when it is. The bobbin needs to be wound correctly. Rewind if it isn't.
5. Wrong thread tension.
Make sure you have the right tension setting. Set tension correctly for different fabrics
6. Problem with the needle.
Check that the needle is not bent or that the end of the needle is blunt. If necessary, replace the needle.
7. The needle hole in the needle plate is damaged.

Make sure there are no scratches around the needle hole in the needle plate. If necessary, replace the needle plate with a new one.
8. Check the presser foot.
Make sure there are no scratches around the hole in the presser foot and that the presser foot you are using is appropriate for the stitch that you want to sew.

Has anyone broken this lever before and managed to get it repaired? I've spoken to a few people who have said they can't get the part and also checked for the part myself and can't find it anywhere.

Without knowing the make and model of the machine it makes it hard to find a piece that can be used. Replacing such a piece can be difficult and might prove a major challenge if you have never done anything like this before. Before trying to locate a new piece do you still have the broken piece that came off? I see it is plastic. If you still have this piece you might want to try some epoxy or even gorilla glue to try and glue the broken piece back on.

This might work for the time being so you can use your machine again. You will still need to supply us with the make and model of the machine so we can see if they do happen to sell replacement parts for this machine.

I have a Toyota RS2000 sewing machine. It is virtually jammed up. The needle and shuttle assembly seems clear, and when disengaging the clutch the motor runs freely. I presume there is a jam between motor and the sewing end. How do I get the covers off? I have removed all screws and the two sides are loose, but cannot be removed.

Check the machine for pieces of thread and/or fabric that may cause it to jam. Make sure it is oiled. Also check the wire to the foot pedal to make sure it isnt loose.
