If it is tarnished, it isn't gold. Gold does not tarnish. Brass turns dark; as does copper. Silver gets a black coating - tarnish. You can get metal cleaners for those in most hardware stores. You can likely make some headway just with a soft cloth and lots of rubbing. I might try an old toothbrush and toothpaste on an piece of discolored jewellery that I was not sure what it was made of. This wouldn't hurt anything of value.

Toothpaste works on most tarnished objects. I especially love the fact that it cleans & polishes my silver (real, not silver plated).

Gold can get dirty but it doesn't tarnish. Silver tarnishes though.

What can I use to clean my gold jewelry?

Mix one part ammonia and one part hydrogen peroxide.
Swish the jewelry in the solution for a few seconds, then rinse with clear water.
This can be used on real gold, costume jewelry and jewelry with "hard" gemstones (diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, etc.)

DO NOT USE this solution on any jewelry with pearls or opals.

Emeralds aren't as hard as rubies and sapphires. They should only be cleaned in warm water with a drop of dishwashing soap. If the band has to be cleaned, use a silver or gold polishing cloth. A jeweler told my Mother this many years ago when she bought her emerald ring.

I put my gold and diamonds in a jar with a denture cleaning tablet. No scrubbing, just rinse and wear.

Sorry, Southern Saver, you should not use ammonia on costume jewelry. It will ruin most of it. For thirteen years I have been making and selling an ammonia free jewelry cleaner called Reflections that is safe for all metals and stones, even opals and pearls. Ammonia also leaves a residue on the back of diamonds and they will be cloudy in a few days. Please be careful about recommending ammonia, as it is very harsh.

I put my gold rings in a jewelry cleaner just for 15 minutes and they're not gold anymore, hardly at all. Why? How can I fix it or can I? I have 19 of them.

Most likely there were not real gold, just gold colored or a light gold plating. If they were sold to you as real gold, I would take them back to where you bought them.

I almost never take off my gold chain link necklace. I recently dyed my hair and like an idiot, I didn't think to remove it then either. It has been about 2 weeks and I took the chain off and found that it had been stained by the dye.

How can I remove the dye from the chain? Please help.

Cleaning your gold jewelry is a very simple process and should be done to clean off the oils from your skin, hair spray, etc. to bring back that sparkle and shine.

When I worked for a jewelry store, we used commercial products that we also sold for home jewelry cleaning.
