Cleaning Hair Bows

August 17, 2009

Cleaning Hair BowsMy daughter wears bows in her hair and they are always getting dirty. Instead of spending $5-$10 to replace the dirty bows, I used a small brush and Dawn dishwashing liquid and scrubbed the bows clean. I placed them in a window that gets lots of sun so they will dry quickly and will be ready to wear in no time. They look brand new! I figured I saved at least $35 or more and the bows look brand new.

Can I wash hair bows in a garment bag in the washing machine? I was just gifted like 20 hair bows, pretty big ones. Washing by hand will take awhile, but I don't want to ruin them either.

I would not take the chance. Wash by hand in the sink.

You could soak them in Oxyclean detergent,it cleans with little effort without the worry,of a machine!

Hand washing is your best bet, although if they are silk, you may want to just freshen them up by letting them air out in the sun.

Group by color, swish and air dry.

I would not take the chance and wash these in a machine. Even if you put them in a garment bag this can destroy some of them. Your best bet is to hand wash them. There are some mild detergents on the market today that you can buy to soak them in.

You may not need to scrub them all clean but just soak them to get off the dirt and rinse them afterward. Then air dry them.

I would not or if I did, I would put it in a pillow case and use a gentle cycle and cold water. Best to gently hand wash in the sink if you are sure the color won't bleed.

They can damage your washer or break your if you just toss them in with other items.

I would wash by hand. The bow itself may become damaged.

Wash by hand with maybe a little blue Dawn or Woolite.
You can probably gently scrub with a soft hand brush if necessary.
Do not wring or twist as it may loosen the clip from the bow.

Rinse several times and blot water out with a soft towel.
Place in a warm place to dry quickly as the clip may be one that will rust if left wet very long.

Washing by hand is the best option for these. You don't want the cloth part to unravel.

That is not a good idea. The bows may fray and unravel. Wash gently in the sink.

Put hair bow inside of a sock and safety pin the end so it does not come out, this will help with fraying and the shape!

Can I use Clorox to clean my daughter's hair bows?

Using Clorox would depend on the material the bows are made of. Can you take a small sample of the material from the bows and try the Clorox on that? If it works, go ahead. If you are talking about plain ribbons that you tie, they are hand washable/air dry.

If you are talking about, more elaborate ready made ones with bows and flowers. They can be cleaned by putting cornmeal in a bag, and shaking to coat thoroughly, then brush off the cornmeal.
