Determining the Value of a Leonardo Collection Figurine?

August 27, 2020

Information About Leonardo Collection Figurines? - WestiesI bought these dogs without asking about the material thinking they were bisque porcelain like so many other things I have from Leonardo's collection. I am selling them now and a client asked if they were resin. That question confused me, I fear I was wrong. Can anyone help me know the material that makes these dogs?

Thank you very much.

We sold a bunch of these in the Hallmark store I worked in and they were all resin. I don't remember any of the dogs in this series being glass, but that was a long time ago.

What may help you is knowing that bisque is a rough glass and will shatter if dropped. Porcelain is a smooth glass that will shatter if dropped. Resin is a hard plastic that will chip or pit or when dropped but it will not shatter.

You an usually tell by running your thumb nail over it which material it is. The other thing is if you "ping" it...resin sounds like a thud, bisque sounds like a thump , and porcelain sounds almost like a chime.

I have had some of this collection in the past that had the original paperwork and I'm almost positive they were made of resin.
Doing research it seems that most people do not really know what these are made of and so just leave that part out of the description.

The pieces like yours that I did find (for sale & sold) usually had resin as the material.

I see that you have your pieces listed for sale on Etsy and they look nice.

Hi. It is not stamped at the bottom. But has the label around the ornament. Where else would it be marked? Thank you

I did not see you had two posts with similar items. So sorry. Yes, I do believe this is part of the same series. Probably from the early 2000s.

It should have a box with the name. If it is like they were in the US, there are a few that are not marked on the piece but have hangtags and boxes that offer proof of identify. I am assuming that those sold elsewhere were the same way.

When I sold these in a retail setting, we encouraged people to save all materials (boxes and hangtags) to help with resale value in the future. Sadly were were selling these as "investment" pieces and that return on investment never materialized the way were were taught to sell.

The values I quoted you in your other post would be the same for this one--with the caveat that without the box, it would be less.

How tall is this one? Again, height may help me give you a better starting range.

Thanks for sharing!

Are you in the US? These pieces were, from my understanding, primarily marketed and sold in the UK and countries other than the United States, so in all my years of selling Leonardo pieces, I never got to see one in the wild or sell them in retail (either new when I worked at Hallmark stores or as a reseller). I am fascinated by the pieces!

They are often referred to collectively as the African Collection and there are a number of mother and child combinations, including infants and small children. There are also elephants and other wild life in the series from what I can see.

There are no examples I can find of this exact one; however, that only means I haven't found it on my first search. If I can do a deeper dive on this, I will, once you tell me how tall it is and the materials:

--Do you know what material yours is--metals usually feel cold to the touch...resin feels cold, but will hold the heat if you keep touching it. The resin pieces are sometimes called "bronzed" because they are a bronze paint on a resin material.

As for values, I was surprised to see that there are no sold examples of any of the several dozen pieces I looked at. The unsold values I have seen for (other like, but not exact) figurines range from £5.00 to £150.

With more info, perhaps I can offer more specifics so you can gauge where to start yours. The taller the piece, the higher the starting ask--of course--people can ask anything. It will take sold versions to give you today's market value--so I will continue to look for those once I know more.

Thanks for sharing!

Currently, nobody is selling this figurine online. However, there are a lot of figurines being sold right now. The asking prices of these items start at $3.50 and go up to $40. The smaller figurines are the lower price and larger ones are at the higher prices.

I am sad to see these lovely pieces with such low asking and selling prices. They were so expensive when new.

The bronze version of the figurine (15 inches) just sold in December for only £12.99 + shipping. (it did not have the box).

With the box you may be able to fetch more, but since you don't have the box, you can see if the one Judy gave you sells, and that will be the current market value.

The bronze figures usually sell for more than the ceramic, so I am guessing that asking price is high...but you never know.

If you are shipping it, please double box it and make sure the piece is not touching the sides. A pool noodle (or other good foam packing is critical to protecting this in transit. You said you are in the Republic of Ireland so hopefully your postal system is more careful than our US one is.

I stopped selling all fragile items online because of too much breakage.

Post back how your sale goes! Thanks for sharing!

Such a shame to see nice items like this so low in value especially when they were high value when first made.
I found several but only one that had sold anytime recently. A 'bronze' piece sold in December for GBP $12.99 plus shipping. These figurines are not actually 'bronze' but has a bronze 'effect' on a resin figurine.

I did not find another sold figurine so I believe this would be the nearest we could come to 'current value' even though your statue is plain.
Sometimes prices like this make us rethink whether we should sell or keep items like this.
