Cleaning a Leather Sofa

December 12, 2016

Gel decorations meant for glass were put on the arm of my leather couch. I now have multicolored fall leaves impreganated on the arm. I tried baby wipes, but the gel decorations seem to have left a hard film over the dye that the wipe cannot penetrate.

Oh, and I also tried a dab of paint thinner to no avail. Any other ideas?Removing Dye Stains on Leather Couch

I rather like the leaf stains, and I'd just go with them. I can't think of anything that won't harm the leather, sorry. Avoid alcohol, acetone and ammonia - and these are just the things that might work! So I'd rather have a pretty pattern than damaged leather.

I had large globs and spray spots of white house paint that had dried for months on a new gray leather couch. It took me about thirty minutes to remove all the paint using the vehicle leather wipes.

I rubbed each paint spot lightly and consistently while using the wettest portion of each wipe, and switching them out when needed.

area where dye was removedI have no idea what took the color out of my leather couch on the head area. I wiped down the entire couch with the cleaner provided by manufacturer and it took the color off the head area only.

It is obviously not the cleaner, but whatever hair products that you have been using. I don't think there is anything that can be done about this.

You'll just have to put an afghan over it. In the olden days doilies were hung over the back of sofas to keep hair cream off of the upholstery.

When my sofa started to loose colour at the head, I washed it in soapy water. Must of rubbed too hard, as the head area ended up completely removed. Had to call in a professional to put a complete new piece of leather on the back of sofa. He informed me that the area lost its colour due to grease coming of husbands head, made worse by having little hair!

Try a feed store or Tack (for horses) shop and get saddle soap, jsut follow directions. It's made for cleaning leather safely. Yes it does involve getting the leather wet, and, you may need to get Neets foot oil or another leather conditioner and, a protective spray to keep the sofa soft, and, minimize future cleanings but, it won't change to color or damage the leather.

It can not be done. Don't put your family at risk. Throw it away.

Try saddle soap, it works on my horses saddle if it's been left in the tack room for a while

To clean a leather settee, don't buy all the expensive cleaning products, buy some soap that you wash your hands with. Get a bucket of warm water, wet the soap and rub the soap onto the leather with a wet cloth it brings out all the dirt, etc.

I have had a cream leather sofa for about ten years and find it very easy to care for. I simply dust it with a dry cloth most of the time. Any spots may be easily wiped off, I use a damp cloth, not wet!

I assume you could use leather soap or cleaner, but I have never found it to be necessary. I hope this helps you.

I slept on my newer dark leather couch and got very hot with a black t-shirt on. When I woke up, ink from my shirt was imprinted on the couch. Please somebody give me an idea of how to remove this.

Hello Rocky,

In regards to your leather stained sofa seeing that it is new, did you purchase a warranty on stains? If so, my advise would be to contact your warranty service and have this taken care of professionally and leave the problem in their hands. If you had not purchased a warranty then the problem lies on you.

My suggestion to you is you need to know what type of leather you own. Is it Aniline, Protected (pigmented)or Nubuck? Once your leather is identified then you can proceed with the correct steps in removing the transfer of silkscreen ink from your shirt.
If your leather is (Aniline):
Step 1. Strong Cleaner
Step 2. Leather Protection Cream
Dry between steps with hair dryer
If problem persists use: (Soft Remover/Cleaner)
Always finish job with Protection Cream

If your leather is (Protected/Pigmented):
Use the same steps as Aniline

If your leather is (Nubuck):
Step 1. Use Nubuck Cloth
Step 2. Apply Leather Degreaser
Step 3. Foam Cleaner
Step 4. Use Nubuck Cloth
Step 5. Apply Eco Protector
Dry in between steps with hair dryer
