Breeding Lovebirds?

August 6, 2018

Lovebirds Not MatingI have a female and I believe a male lovebird (based on behavior). She is trying to mate with him and he can't seem to figure it all out. He masturbates all the time, even right next to her when she is doing her mating dance. I've seen him attempt to climb in her, but just can't seem to get things right. There have been eggs twice, but neither time have they been fertilized. In the picture she is trying to mate and he is masturbating.

They may not be compatible. You can do DNA sexting. Read this article. www.sexadodeaves.com/.../

Birds need to both be healthy before they mate, so it is possible one is unwell.

My friend who raises birds takes hers to a vet that specializes in birds to get a clean bill of of health when she is trying unsuccessfully to have them breed.

Usually the finding is a sick bird or more often than not, two of the same gender (ooops).

If you have a male and female with clean bill of health, then she says it could take up to a year or two for mating to happen. Some birds even longer. Kinda like people sometimes I guess. Good luck!

I would try and find another male for your female if it were me. I think that maybe the male has some type of health issues that are causing him not to mate with your female.

They do have vets who specialize in birds and mating. You might need to take yours to the vet to have them examined to determine if your male is sick or not.

I think both are females because I had the same condition before and I thought they were female and male, but unfortunately they were female

Whenever I put a nesting box in the cage of my lovebirds, two birds always ruin it by dropping it down. I have also tried to attach it with a long and thick wire, but it never worked. What should I do?

Firstly & most important is to seperate the pair that you want to breed - as with most birds at breeding time. There can be fighting to the death - also other birds will sabortage the nest & eggs.

Try screwing small screws into the side of the box & wrap thin wire (like that would be used on the back of paintings) around the screws and attach to the side of the cage - support the bottom of the nest box with solid perches.

PS. Be sure not to leave over hanging wire sticking out,as the birds could get it in their eyes.

I have a pair of lovebirds. I bought them in 2009 and the female has never laid any eggs. Is there anything I can do?
