I heard somewhere to just ask the caller to hold on for a second so you can...answer the door, pick up the baby, anythng you can think of. Then you lay the phone down and carry on with your day. After they hang on for awhile THEY get frustrated and remove your name from their list. Well, I tried that. I laid the phone down, went downstairs and put a load of laundry on to wash, folded the load from the dryer, and put them away. When I went back upstairs to the phone the poor guy was still saying, "hello? hello? Are you there?" I did the dishes and he was STILL saying it. I felt soooo bad and I never did that again but he never called back either. Might give that a try.
